  • Provided the first experimental evidence that the tri-molecular reaction between phenol and acetone to form Bisphenol-A is actually a second order reaction that proceeds through the rate limiting intermediate formation of a tertiary alcohol 2-(4-hydroxyphenyl) –propan-2-ol (A). It was hypothesized that the rate of condensation enhanced by mercaptans was due to the formation of hemithioketals and thioketals that enhanced the concentration of 1,1-dimethyl-1-hydroxy- carbonium ion, which resulted in increased formation of (A). (A) then formed the corresponding carbonium ion in acidic environment and condensed fast with phenol to form Bisphenol-A.

  • Played a key role in formulating national policies to promote the development and production of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) in India from the basic stage in late 60s and the decade of 70s.

  • Also played an important role in rationalizing and reducing the prices of pharmaceutical formulations in India during the decade of 70s to benefit the common man.

  • Promoted in early 90s, the creation of alliance between Industry and Institutions in India and developed policies for easing protection of Intellectual Property Rights for inventions in Public funded Institutions, working in Biotechnology. Pioneered in transferring institutionally developed technologies to industry.

  • Played a major role in conceptualizing and implementing Bio-safety Issues related to the use of Genetically Modified Substances and Organisms in Research and Applications in India. Had substantially contributed to inducting Bt Cotton technology in Indian agriculture.

  • Played a significant role in the adoption of the Cartagena Protocol on Bio-safety which is a Treaty meant for regulating the trans-boundary movement of Living Modified Organisms across the borders of Countries.
